Sometimes they have been either over or under watered by staff who don't care or understand how to take care of plants. Then they usually die within a couple of weeks of purchase. I usually buy plants from this local plant store that expands operations in the summer. It's run by a couple of women (actually sisters) and their plants are always healthy. They're a little more expensive than HD but it's worth it to get good plants.

On the other hand, container gardening on condo balconies can be tricky - wind can be very drying and with the current tendency for balcony enclosures to be mostly solid or glass, you can end up with a heat well when there is insufficient wind - good in the spring, but it can cook your plants in the summer. Another factor is getting the drainage right otherwise your plants can get root rot or conversely, the soil doesn't hold sufficient moisture. Some plants are more tolerant than others.

Tomato plants are pretty tolerant - they are like weeds. Peppers are also pretty tolerant of container gardening, so are a lot of the herbs.

They sure are. I'm going to plant a Roma tomato plant in a 5 gallon bucket next year. They took over the garden beds this year but I still got a great yield of 5 varieties of peppers. They're still producing. I think I've got another 2 weeks left before the nights drop into the 40s.

I've only had a good experience with Home Depot. My only complaint is that they've had the exact same selection for 3 years now.

The Roma should do well, just make sure you pinch off the suckers if you want a bigger yield.

I actually had more than I could use from two plants. I made chili, meat sauce and a few other dishes but it was too much. I must have around 30 pounds.

You could make sauce and can them for the winter. Get a few mason jars.

Too late now but it's an option for next year. I'm moving toward growing what I know I'll eat on a regular basis. Besides greens, I haven't bought any vegetables in a few months because of all the peppers.
