My Friend Jake

Jake was born as a mix breed mutt on a pit bull breeding farm. His only purpose was to be a bait dog for the training of pure bred pit bulls for fighting. They pulled his front teeth so he couldn't bite back with any real damage.
16 years ago he somehow escaped or was rescued and we met. He liked my wife but not me very much at first. We believe it was because male men were his handlers and they were very mean to him. They for some reason shot him 3 times with a pellet gun. They pulled his ears and hit him to try to make him mean so he would unsuccessfully try to fight the trained pit bulls.
We became friends. It took a bit. I understand why he didn't trust men. It only made me that much more determined to make him forget.
15 months ago the Vet told us he only had weeks to live, not months. He defied those odds and walked a mile every morning until today.
The unconditional love we experienced these last 16 years was extra special.

He died in my arms this morning.
I miss him dearly.

Im sorry to hear that Benjamin, that just sucks and something all dog owners have to endure, hang in there and maybe think about saving another dog.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You brought joy into the life of that poor abused dog and in turn you were repaid a million times over with 16 years of love and loyalty. He will stay in your heart forever.

When you feel up to it give all that love left over to another rescue. Jake would wag his tail at that idea I'm sure. You are a good human being Ben.
