This was interesting as it pertains to a recent argument in which civil society was claimed to be natural and society an artifice of the state when in historical fact the opposite is true. The old regime was social. Civil society was separated out from the state by representational government.

I would say that a number of intellectual or philosophical factors were at work but, yes, the individual's direct relationship and even dependence on the state appears to be the (intended) result of liberal democracy.

In a way, representative government does become a form of cannibalism. It is created, presumably in order to protect liberty, but opens the door to totalitarianism, which consumes it.
