You have to take a lot of these stories with a grain of salt. There is usually a grain of truth and a great deal of exaggeration. Legends grow about people, especially after they are dead because they make for more spectacular and interesting narratives for the tale tellers.

It was until the Council of Niceaea. They erased a lot of the early doctrine. But you are right that spin off sects continued to believe the original and still do today.
