Its a dilemna that only reinstating the draft eventually can fix and id bet that theres many that refuse to go, thats just a personal feeling.
It isn't just a lack of desire to join the military. Close to 80% don't qualify for one reason or another. Typically weight or criminal record.

That was in peacetime, with an all volunteer force. Not only were they an administrative burden, their continued presence sometimes had a negative effect on the morale of the group. I can't even imagine what adding the element of conscription into that sort of environment would mean in terms of readiness and discipline.
That was my experience when I was a trial counsel for 2ID's DISCOM units. I think I had 26 company commanders to advise, 4 battalion commanders, and the brigade commander.

I agree. If I was still in I would want to deploy. But yes, from a policy position the US should focus on its vital national security interests.

First time: Nov 89 - Nov 90. I was in 2-503rd. Did a DMZ mission with them (winter). They deactivated and I moved over to 5-20th (M). Did a DMZ mission with them (summer).

Second time: Nov 00 - May 02: DISCOM trial counsel (legal advisor to commanders / prosecute the Courts-martial in the unit).

I was on Camp Hovey and Camp Casey (and GP Ouellette on the DMZ).

I was at camp Hovey, B co 1st of the 23d. 1985-86. We did a rotation on GP Ouelette in the winter of 1986. We had to deal with “Singing Sam”. You probably never heard of him. I was a squad leader. Second squad, second platoon. I had the best team leaders in the company. Best job in the army.

I was in C Co 5-20 at Ft Lewis as part of the 25th division when I retired. Then we were light infantry. I retired as we were preparing to transition into a striker brigade transferring to 2ID.

The last time I was in Korea I was the NCOIC of G-5 / CMO. 97-98. I stayed on Camp Casey. That job was incredible. I had more fun than any soldier should be allowed to have.

I worked closely with an O-5 who was in charge of the JAG unit on Camp Casey. I don’t remember his name. He was awesome. I was banging one of his female Captains. She wore me out. My first line supervisor was a Captain. He called her “the beast”. He was right.
