Seattle Public Schools Will Start Teaching That Math Is Oppressive

Postmodern, neo-Marxist identity politics has left college campuses for high school classrooms.

Seattle Public Schools Will Start Teaching That Math Is Oppressive

Math is a deeply frustrating subject for many elementary and high school students. But Seattle public schools are gearing up to accuse math of a litany of more serious crimes: imperialism, dehumanization, and oppression of marginalized persons.

The district has proposed a new social justice-infused curriculum that would focus on "power and oppression" and "history of resistance and liberation" within the field of mathematics. The curriculum isn't mandatory, but provides a resource for teachers who want to introduce ethnic studies into the classroom vis a vis math....

... having read over the proposed framework, I have to say that it does seem fairly terrible. It's chock full of social justice jargon that sounds smart but is actually vapid. What does it mean to decode mathematical "beauty" or "identify how the development of mathematics has been erased from learning in school?" (Has it been erased? That seems like a problem for history class.) The guidance says it will "re-humanize mathematics through experiential learning" and facilitate learning "independently and interdependently." That's a fancy way of saying almost nothing at all.

...This is verbatim from the proposal: Students will be able to "identify the inherent inequities of the standardized testing system used to oppress and marginalize people and communities of color," "explain how math has been used to exploit natural resources," and "explain how math dictates economic oppression."...

...Infusing the existing math curriculum with a bunch of unfounded progressive assumptions about cultural appropriation is a silly approach.
Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire. ― Gustav Mahler

I live in a fairly conservative city across the bay from Seattle. People have been moving out of Seattle and into to my area for the last couple of years for a variety of reasons. Mostly economic reasons, but the direction Seattle schools are taking is also one of these reasons.

The influx of people from Seattle has slowed some recently as there are very few homes for sale in the area now. I've had real estate agents knock on my door out of the blue and ask if I would be willing to entertain offers for my home.

The problem is that these people complain about the results of Seattle's extreme liberalism, but then bring elements of it here.

I'm unable to copy and paste this cartoon due to copyright restrictions - but mostly because the site I found it on won't let me - but check this out.

It's easier to teach something with no meaning or all meanings.

These kids are going to be up $#@! creek when they become adults. They will be a true underclass.

I remeber back in the 90's they wanted to teach math to inner city kids through story problems. Not the traditional story problems such as a train leaves Los Angeles traveling east at 70 MPH...

They came up with a culturally appropriate problem. Rufus sells crack for $10.00 a rock, how many rocks does he need to sell.....

Of course. Don't know if that's true or not, but I can see how people would take an idea to make story problems more relatable and go completely in the wrong direction.
