Do you have pets, Lummy, or have you ever? If you have, think about one of them being tortured for some sick person's pleasure - howling or screaming in pain, unable to comprehend why this is happening to them. If that doesn't make you sick to your stomach and make your heart pound and your blood boil, there is something wrong with you. Laws that protect animals from abuse are society's opinion that this is as wrong as something gets. Do try to get off the faux-macho "Hey, they're just animals" train and comprehend.

The federal law is very narrowly focused. Fortunately many state laws - not all, unfortunately - are much more comprehensive, and need to be.

The more I see and think about it, the less I favor the "animal abusers often go on to be violent toward people" rationale...because, while true, it lessens, in my view, the inherent evil and seriousness of the animal abuse itself. There is something seriously wrong with a person who can look into an animal's eyes and do the things they do to them - something twisted and evil at its core. Those people deserve to be punished, shunned and then punished some more. I favor a list, similar to the sex offender lists, that would help to keep track of those people and hopefully ensure that they are never able to own a pet, live in a household with a pet, or work in a job where they have contact with animals they could hurt or abuse. If you or people who think like you believe that that kind of thing is government overreach, I couldn't care less.
This is fascinating. Tell us more about "inherent evil" and this state of being "evil at its core". What could that possibly mean?

Personally, I don't think this law goes far enough. I think anyone who does those things to an animal ought to be hung.
As a first hand witness to horrible cruelty to animals it has always made me angry that the laws and consequential punishments and penalties aren't nearly severe enough.

You just made me think of how horrible it had to have been for my friend Jake when they pulled his front teeth and shot him with a pellet gun, three times.
It took me several months to get him to let me touch his front legs and feet. Likewise to touch his ears.
Never ever in his entire life would he let me or anyone look at his teeth.
The horror ingrained into him was unbelievable.

House passes bill to make animal cruelty a federal felony...

This should not be a federal issue. States and counties are able to handle this issue sufficiently. There's no need for the Feds to insert themselves in this.

I wasn't there to witness it. Jake came to me after he was rescued from a Pit Bull breeding farm.
I guess I didn't say it correctly. My witnessing was the aftermath. Sorry.
Had I been there I'm not quite sure what I would have done but I would have put a stop to it.
    Whatever it would have taken.

Thank you. I struggled with the federal aspect as well. Before I saw your post, I kind of likened it to federal laws re kiddie porn perhaps.

As Standing Wolf said it takes a person that deeply emotional sick to look into an animals eyes and hurt them
Evil is a good description for the sick pos.

Sometime in the 70s we answered an animal abuse call, a woman told us she heard the most pitiful wails from a dog from the house next door she said she heard vicious growling. She said shes only been living there 2 days she just moved in.

We knocked got no answer and started to go around the back and came to a chain link fence with 2 pitbulls and a dalmation still alive but mangled beyond comprehension.

Theres two guys each holding a pitbull and they were taking turns having the pits attack this dalmation that was CHAINED TO A TABLE with 8 inchs of chain and couldnt even fricken move. My partner shot the dalmation out of pity, he had one leg torn almost completely off and you could see his throat ripped on the side and mulitible woulds all over, he was slowly suffering and dying. These 2 had tortured other dogs to death.

How many of you reading this could do that, im betting none and thats why evil is an appropriate tag for these scumbags
