In our church, however, just the opposite often happens: Many attend Sunday School, yet leave before church services begin.

I'm Catholic and have never heard of Sunday School for adults. We were taught the scriptures for 12 years. That suffices.

We are not "taught" the scriptures (as in indoctrinated into a set of beliefs). Rather, the person in charge of the class sets forth some views; and the class may challenge him on...well, anything.
