Well, karma on the forum is historical. At one time you could give karma to others like thanks however more karma you had, the more karma your karma grant could give others, so a new member's karma grant was just a couple of points but a senior member's was huge. You could even donate karma. This was simply a function of the software. There was eventually a scandal suggesting that some members were deliberately inflating the karma of other members and then that option was removed. It now only accrues based on thanks and numbers of posts.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.

Really? Are you stating that members gave karma to one another without knowing if it was a good or bad thing?
Reading the posts above, it would appear that they did not have any knowledge of karma...at least judging by the ones that did comment. I do not know how representative that might be but it seems indicative.

It was a sign of approval.

I would like to cash in my Karma points for a free trip to Hawaii. How do I do that?

The right thing is not always popular. So who cares?

It's similar to likes on Facebook. They are totally worthless.

Did "karma" exist before someone told you it did? No. There is no "karma".

Using your yardstick everything we learn has been taught to us, with the exception of certain functions...like peeing.
I went back and looked closer at Karma and found that several countries use it but in modified forms, (including TPF).
It's difficult to absorb the meanings because it can be both good and bad amongst other things.
There is a lnk for you to see if you can unravel it. If anything one comes away more confused than before reading the article.
