He wants the other dogs to play with him but they're not so inclined most of the time. He jumps on them and head-butts them but most of the time they just look the other way. Maybe I need to make an effort to train him to run alongside my bike. He loves to run and perhaps it would wear him out. The poo thing is just driving me batty.
Border Collies are highly intelligent dogs, smarter than several of our posters here. The downside to that is that they really need a job. They need to be stimulated, not only physically, but mentally. I would suggest that his current hobby is just something he does to keep himself occupied when he gets bored. Eventually, he will find something new to occupy himself.

    Find him a job.

I know you're right -- he's very bright -- and he's ungodly fast! I've got to figure out something to keep him interested. The saints are content to snore the day away. I sure hope his "current hobby" passes quickly. I have a hard time explaining to him why I really don't want him to lick my hand...his eyes get so big and sad.

I'll work on coming up with a job for him. Maybe I need to get some chickens so he can herd them!

I had an English Shepherd for years. They are similar to Border Collies in size, disposition and intellect. They are scary smart and also need a job to keep them occupied. If they don't have a job, they'll create one for themselves.

They are of course, herding dogs, as are Border Collies. He would herd me if I wasn't going where he wanted me to go. He would actually use his shoulder to guide me in the direction he thought I should be going.

Yes, they are herders for sure. I had to teach Oliver not to herd the cast because one of them is 20 years old, and she's too frail to be chased. He learned not to do that very quickly but he runs circles around the me and the other dogs. English Shepherds look a lot like Border Collies so I can believe they have similar personalities. Oli hasn't tried the "shoulder" thing yet but no matter where he is on the land, all I have to do is whistle and he comes running like a bullet. Sometimes I think he's going too fast and will run into me, but he always maneuvers around me. The saints don't have that fancy footwork -- if they're coming straight at you -- you'd better dodge them or they'll send you flying.

This would entail a bit of time and effort on your part, but it might work. Go into the field and spray as many specimens as you can find with something very bitter; there are commercially available things that dogs hate the taste of, but you can probably find something cheaper and more readily accessible that will do just as well. (I'm assuming that he's picking these things up in his mouth and that he hasn't evolved opposable thumbs.) After trying to pick up so many of the things and getting that nasty, bitter taste every time, chances are he'll figure that they all taste that way and he'll knock it off.
