Michigan boy fatally mauled by pit bull his parents were dogsitting

I would never as a parent bring a strange large breed dog into my home even temporarily when my kids were small. Kids make mistakes with animals tugging or hitting the wrong spot or just simply constantly annoying the animal until it reacts.

A 4-year-old Michigan boy was fatally mauled by a pit bull that the boy’s parents were dogsitting for on Tuesday, his family said.

“We experienced a family’s worst nightmare when a dog took the life of Benjamin,” his family said in a statement following the horrendous attack inside their Detroit suburb home.

The dog, which the family said has “never shown aggressive behaviors” left the youngster with neck and body injuries, according to WXYZ. He was declared dead at a nearby hospital.

Benjamin’s sister called 911 as her brother was being attacked, the report said.

Chances are it wasn't a pit bull, either.

    Horrible story.

The reality is that most dog attacks don't involve pit bulls. However, due to their sheer power, pit bull attacks can often end in death.

Pitties can be great dogs, but they're extremely powerful and bread to be powerful. While I do like the breed, they can't be left alone with children (very few dogs can) and breeding of them should probably be phased out or strictly regulated.

It's not just power, it's that "stay on the attack once it begins" instinct. Most dog to human fatalities do involve bull dogs, by a wide margin. I agree on the phase out.
