Dentist appointment.

To morning I went to my semi annual dental check-up and cleaning. The dental tech asked me the usual questions about whether or not I hve an dental pain and such. I told her no, but I brush my teeth too aggressively at times and combine that with flossing, my gums get irritated.


She she worked on me for a bit and said. "You use Listerine don't you". I told her I did because it's supposed to contribute to good dental health. She said that Listerine is among the worst mouth washes or rinses out there. She said it is harmful to your dental healt and contributes to gum disease. She said it also causes dry mouth and that's really detrimental to good dental health.


When she was done, the dentist came in to look me over. I told him that her comments surprised me because I've always heard just the opposite. He said " oh yeah, that crap is horrible, don't use it any longer. That's why your gums are irritated". I said " I buy it in bulk at Costco". He said "pour it down the drain. It might help keep your drains clean".

My dentist told me the same thing -- she said don't use Listerine or Total toothpaste. In fact, she told me the best thing to brush my teeth was a 1:1 ratio of salt and baking soda combined. It's cheap, cleans really well and keep my teeth very white. Not great tasting but I can get past that.

He told me that the very best mouth wash is plain old saltwater. He said if the taste bothers you use Act.


I was just wondering if their dentist said the same thing about Listerine? I have six bottles to pour down the drain.

I never knew that. I've never really been a mouthwash person, luckily it seems. I don't know this person, but what they are saying seems to jibe with what your dentists are telling you. Evidently it's not just listerine, but most mouthwashes that are bad for you.

I use Listerine and then rise with water after.
