What "civil liberties" and what freedom? If you're referring to what may happen in the future as a result of governments employing such technology, it's conceivable that the civil liberties and freedoms of citizens may be in danger. However, I can't justify being opposed to what Walmart or any of the other retailers are doing now, because that doesn't actually violate anything of the kind. Someone taking my photo in a public place is not a violation of my privacy. Using that photo for marketing purposes is just another aspect of what retail businesses do and, in some way, have always done; using it for purposes of identifying known shoplifters and perhaps targeting them for special surveillance is a perfectly legitimate and defensible practice.

You are certainly entitled to that opinion. However that is the very opinion that will have the rest of us on an Orwellian lock down. At what point do they take it to that next level when they have total control, and are aware of every word we say do they start policing our very thoughts? In china they already lock people in camps that have beliefs outside of those acceptable to the gov. We are already working on setting up that same system here in the US. Trump has already said we should build institutions for the mentally ill and the homeless. There is already talk of locking people up who's ways we don't feel align with our own. When our voices are silenced our freedom of speech is thrown out the door. When they compile a profile on us of our every waking moment, then where have our rights to privacy gone?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_liberties
It is about more than just a picture, or a cctv camera. They always use protecting us, to sell something that will remove our civil liberties. https://www.usatoday.com/story/opini...es/3904469002/
We are all brothers and sisters in humanity. We are all made from the same dust of stars. We cannot be separated because all life is interconnected.
I recently received a high dollar pre-paid Visa card as recompense for a particular situation. Being the person I am, I actually read the disclaimer note that came with it. Paraphrase: Your purchases with this prepaid card will be tracked and used for marketing purposes.
They will be getting a small surprise: it will be used for one purchase of flooring. Make of that what they will.
As to facial recognition, I am in support of hermits, and where they use facial recognition, I will not be voluntarily. I don't have anything to hide, but I do not need to supply marketing data to be sold to the highest bidder.

As I wrote...yes, by all means we ought to be on watch for and oppose genuine, real-life instances of our rights and liberties being infringed - but what private companies are doing now, with cameras and databases, violates nothing. In the realm of security, it's no more than a high tech takeoff on the old 'banned customer' photo taped to the cash register. If I object that strenuously to a store using the technology to market products to me, I'll shop somewhere else. The second the government at any level gets involved in this sort of thing in a way that genuinely violates my rights, I'll react.

If the value of the card was not excessive and I really wanted to mess with somebody, I think I'd have used it for something that would give them pause....maybe challenge their marketing skills. Baked beans, douche and a lawn chair, or maybe fifteen rolls of Gorilla Tape.
