Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire. ― Gustav Mahler

I don't know about the first Midway film, but I do know that many aviation-themed war movies, even into the '80s, used finely detailed model airplanes suspended on filament. Not a war film, but I recall reading about how they employed a small model plane in the making of the scene, late in the movie The Right Stuff, where Chuck Yeager's plane is spiraling down to Earth. Even done well, that kind of thing can only be made to look so realistic. CGI, if done right, can truly make a person believe that he's seeing reality.
BTW, I was somehow under the impression that Chuck Yeager had passed away some years ago. I just discovered that he is still living, age 96, in Penn Valley, California. Nice surprise for me - hope he is doing well.
