Dog Owners Beware What You're Feeding Fido

If you're like us, you try to get the healthiest food possible for your furry friends, but if you've switched in the past couple of years to a new brand -- if it's one of the "grain-free" ones -- it might not be as healthy as you think. The FDA issued a warning last year and this year they're listing 16 brands that are most suspect. If you feed any of the following brands, be aware they may be linked to increased heart disease in your pooch.

If you have dogs, read the whole article here.

    • Acana
    • Zignature
    • Taste of the Wild
    • 4Health
    • Earthborn Holistic
    • Blue Buffalo
    • Nature’s Domain
    • Fromm
    • Merrick
    • California Natural
    • Natural Balance
    • Orijen
    • Nature’s Variety
    • NutriSource
    • Nutro
    • Rachael Ray Nutrish
I knew a little bit about this (or something similar) because my daughter breeds and trains a special line of GSDs for work in law enforcement. Last year she was feeding one of these brands and twice females were bred and then both absorbed their pregnancies. My daughter and her vet did quite a bit of research and came to the conclusion the "pulses" in the food were likely at fault. She switched back to Science Diet and no more problems.

But, it's ONLY the GRAIN-FREE varieties of these brands. The regular varieties are not under the gun.

We're now feeding ProPlan Sport 30/20 and it seems to be a good choice.

When Max was a puppy almost 15 yrs ago, the vets used to tout Nutro and sold it in their offices. So we put him on nutro and hes been on it for almost 15 yrs. Im aware of the warning for nutro and grain free its been out there awhile.

We give him Nutro small dog for seniors, and it isnt grain free, but the Vet said dont change him now after all these years, hes healthy and done very well

I donate a 40lb bag of food to the animal shelter once or twice a month, whenever I think about it. I usually buy a brand from SamsClub I forget the name.

All pet food needs to be researched. The common store-bought brands are crap. And a lot comes from China- that stuff killed a lot of pets.

The best food is raw chicken and meat based table scraps without sugar or spices. It’s what dogs have eaten for thousands of years.

I tend to agree. Dogs are meat eaters, their ancestors were predatory meat eaters.

Cats too. If you try to make your cat go vegan, it will die.

True, although unless you know where those chickens are being raised or raise them yourself, you risk the dog consuming campylobacter bacteria, salmonella and/or clostridium perfringens bacteria, which may or may not make him sick, but could make you very ill through contact with the dog.

My late dog lived 18 years on a diet of raw meat (beef, veal or lamb) and cooked table scraps (none with any spices inappropriate for dogs) raw bones to chew on and Milk Bones. He also got all the cartilage from any chicken we were eating, which he really loved. He was never, ever sick except once when I think he ate some long dead thing he found in the back yard, that caused vomiting for a few hours. He was never overweight and he didn't mooch food like most dogs do, except for cheese! He also enjoyed the odd little cup of milky tea.

He just eventually developed dementia from very old age, but he was in amazing physical condition until the very end.

Dogs are omnivores, cats are total carnivores. Cats would literally starve to death on a vegan diet.

The success of dogs as a species is the fact that they are both predators and scavengers. That adaptability is thought to be the reason that they started hanging around human encampments i.e. to scavenge whatever the humans were tossing away as inedible.
