It doesn't have to be that way. And businesses are changing their supply chains because of the tariffs. When those tariffs are ended there is a decent chance those businesses will be settled into where ever they moved to. Business was moving south from China anyway because the Chinese middle class is growing raising the costs of doing business there.

Let's see a raise of hands: who approves of China blocking US business from its markets, of China stealing our tech, and of China dumping (legal term) products onto the US market?

It doesn't have to be that way, but just like getting off fossil fuels, it's not something that can be done overnight or at a financial cost.

Don't get me wrong, while I see China ahead in this trade war, I'm not on their side. China plays dirty, it engages in outright theft and it's a despicable regime. They screw us up here in Canada as well. I'm just pointing out the reality of the situation.

It would have been better for Trump to lay out his trade demand. Then say we will impose tariffs up to X. But implement those 10% at a time month by month. That would have given businesses time to adjust with less pain.

The problem is that the US has become so reliant on cheaper imports from China and elsewhere. The result is that certain industries have gone extinct domestically. It's not easy to restart those industries and even harder to do at competitive pricing.

The invisible hand alone would have a hard time doing it without costly growing pains.

It sure could have been changed in a short period of time with a phased approach. As I said, supply chains were migrating south of China anyway now that its middle class is so large. They won't work for a dollar a day any more.
