Scientists Were Hunting for the Next Ebola. Now the U.S. Has Cut Off Their Funding

See more at the link https://centralnewsnow.com/scientist...their-funding/

    Excerpt:

In a move that worries many public health experts, the federal government is quietly shutting down a surveillance program for dangerous animal viruses that someday may infect humans.

The United Nations Environment Program estimates that a new animal disease that can also infect humans is discovered every four months. Ending the program, experts fear, will leave the world more vulnerable to lethal pathogens like Ebola and MERS that emerge from unexpected places, such as bat-filled trees, gorilla carcasses and camel barns.

The program, known as Predict and run by the United States Agency for International Development, was inspired by the 2005 H5N1 bird flu scare. Launched 10 years ago, the project has cost about $207 million.

The initiative has collected over 140,000 biological samples from animals and found over 1,000 new viruses, including a new strain of Ebola. Predict also trained about 5,000 people in 30 African and Asian countries, and has built or strengthened 60 medical research laboratories, mostly in poor countries.
We are all brothers and sisters in humanity. We are all made from the same dust of stars. We cannot be separated because all life is interconnected.

We should be more worried about the disease that comes over the southern border that is under reported. We not only contacted new disease by entrants but were experiencing a resurgence of old disease we had tamped down to nothing.

Sounds like they're going to shuffle the funding for the Predict program into Africa and Asia universities that will use the same model. I guess they were at the end of their second 5-year funding project but that the work of identifying animal/human pathogens will continue to go on.

Years ago I spoke with the head of the CDC in Kansas after my daughter got West Nile meningitis. She told me the funding they get is so small it's ridiculous. University students have to volunteer their own time for research and they have to depend on the media to get out warning to the citizens. She said legislators just don't care to fund the CDC well.

And then there's the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer in the US. But, it's not stopping hunters from hunting and eating the meat. Some say CWD won't jump the animal/human barrier, but then there's this --

"We are in an unknown territory situation," Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told USA TODAY on Friday. Last week, Osterholm testified before his state lawmakers,
    warning about possible human impacts.

"It is probable that human cases of chronic wasting disease associated with consumption with contaminated meat will be documented in the years ahead," he said. "It’s possible the number of human cases will be substantial and will not be isolated events."
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...ns/2882550002/

In areas where CWD has been identified, they probably ought to stop deer hunting. And, it'd be great if they could come up with some sort of food immunization to keep it from spreading -- but, who knows?

This map is nearly a year old, so the area is likely larger by now.

The CDC might do something inconvenient if they had good funding.

It would be very interesting to know how many guns died last year.

I think they do. At a national level anyway.

But, to be fair, although gun deaths are often highly publicized and sensationalized, they pale in comparison (statistically) to other forms of death, such as death from medical errors, which is the third-leading cause of death in our nation.

They're also grossly inflated by suicides.
