Army changes the way it selects battalion commanders

This is a long over due change in the way battalion commanders are selected. As the article notes, a private trying to serve with the 75th Ranger Regiment gets far more scrutiny (an pain) than those considered for battalion command.

Army officers bucking for a battalion command will soon have to go through a five-day assessment course aimed at evaluating their mental and physical potential for the sought-after assignment.

Beginning in January, officers selected from the lieutenant colonel centralized selection list will attend the Battalion Commander Assessment Program (BCAP) at Fort Knox, Kentucky, according to a recent Army news release.

Until now, battalion commanders have been selected by a board review of personnel files.

"We spend more time and more money on selecting a private to be in [75th] Ranger Regiment than we do selecting what I would argue is one of the most consequential leadership positions in the Army, our battalion commanders," Army Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville said in October at the Association of the United States Army's annual meeting, according to the release

I think this is a positive change. I see no downside with this. I've had battalion and brigade commander's who were a disaster.

Agreed. I liked the part where they said a private gets more scrutiny to join the 75th Ranger Regiment.

Can't argue with that, because you've really got to prove yourself as a private. They aren't giving you a break because of your inexperience. They'll see how quickly they can break you.

It is good to see they are ramping up vetting for battalion commanders.

What is there to ramp up, really?

You look at his 201 file. Does he have leadership experience at platoon and company level?
    Does he have staff experience?
Has he been to the requisite schools?
How have his superiors and peers rated him as a soldier and leader?

Really, what more is there to look at?

If you read the OP you will see. They plan to include a lot more in the vetting process to include a psych eval.

I've had more than battalion commander who was very intelligent and was supposedly an excellent company commander, but a disaster as a battalion commander.

Also I've had a couple who did not appear to be an imposing figure, but were awesome. Great leaders.
