I have a date for my surgery now - January 7th, which happens to be my daughter's birthday. I haven't talked to anyone yet about what to expect afterwards, in terms of pain, ability to talk, eat, swallow, etc., so I'm just preparing for the worst and assuming I won't feel like doing much for a couple of days. Maybe I'll stock up on cherry vanilla ice cream.

Maybe not ice cream - it causes phlegm. Some sorbet would be tasty.

Had the surgery yesterday, and I guess it went okay. The doctor "contoured" (his word) the interior of my larynx, removing scar tissue from the tracheotomy, and injected steroids, as well as putting some kind of gel in my vocal chords. Don't know if the latter has had any effect on my voice because I'm not allowed to talk for a couple of days. It actually hurts like hell this morning. They gave me a scrip for oxy, which I filled but haven't taken; the pain isn't that bad. I only got the pills because the way things are going it's just going to get harder and harder to get that stuff when seriously needed, so it makes sense to pay the forty cents for twenty pills now and stick them up in the medicine chest for a dire emergency. I'm well supplied with Jell-O and orange juice, and my son made me a big bowl of chocolate pudding, so I'm just going to veg out the rest of the week and watch some DVDs.

I'm glad the surgery is over with, but I'm sorry to hear that you're in pain. Maybe not a bad idea to stash the Oxy -- for an emergency down the road. I've never had any so I don't know if it's all it's cracked up to be or not.

Enjoy your juice and jello and treat yourself kindly.

I tried to talk to one of the dogs a little while ago, and all I could manage was a sort of croaking noise. Hope this doesn't take longer than over the weekend. I have to get back to work and I can't do that in pantomime.

A magic marker and some large cards? I hope the inflammation is short lived and you are back in good vocal shape when you get back to work. Enjoy the jello and pudding!
