He was once part of them, but he saw that they went too far and had the wrong motivations. He talks about this in the Madness of Crowds.

We've had homosexuals here who spoke out. You wouldn't believe the backlash. "You were never really gay" etc. It was like being an apostate or homo Uncle Tom.
