Mental health facilities for those who truly need it perhaps”.

just in the county I used to work in, we had two very large mental hospitals, one a state facility and one a county hospital which were boarded up. The actual mental health facility now is the county jail. That’s Effective

In my home town they just closed a homeless shelter and now the people who once relied on it now sleep on the streets in front of it. But they can somehow find the money hire artists to paint murals on large electrical boxes and dilapidated buildings. The other day they painted a mural on box, then replaced it two days later and painted a new mural.

If these sculptures are not in a high visibility area, they get destroyed.
I did a quick google and found out the budget for this year in NY was 4.2 billion, an increase from last year of $112 billion but I'm not sure if that was due to law or recognition of need. I'll have to research further to see if it is law or not.

Lets say the argument is need. Why should government fund the arts? Why can’t private organizations and such do that?

The government shouldn't be funding the arts; that should be funded privately however I suspect that if that were the case, funding would be literally non-existent for the most part.

art is subjective...whatever the critics/gallery owners decided is marketable is what becomes valuable...its consumer based smoke and mirrors for the rich investors...

Let's suppose you're right. What's wrong with that?

There is nothing wrong with that IMO.

I recall growing up there was a large mental hospital in the next town where they basically housed people with severe mental illnesses. At some point someone decided that was in humane so they closed the hospital and decided to integrate the mentally ill into society. Basically rented them housing and made them outpatients. We had a whole bunch of mentally ill people doing stuff like standing on the side of the road yelling at cars after that.

But it was considered more humane.
