    Maxims and Reflections

Having lived this long, you would think I should have learned something about life that would be of use. One lives and learns, and learns mostly to accept things for what they are. For many, it takes a long time to learn this simple lesson in life - "too soon old, too late smart" - as the saying goes. Still, considering past mistakes, one should be glad not to be young and have to go through it all again.

Several years ago, it occurred to me that "It is a foolish man who believes that he knows all of the answers until he is absolutely certain that he has heard all of the questions". I'd never heard it expressed quite that way before, and, full disclosure, I was pretty pleased with myself. In fact, until just a month or two ago, it was part of my forum signature. That was when, while researching something else, I came across this quote from Confucius: "He who knows all the answers has not been asked all the questions".

Son of a gun...that Confucius guy stole my line.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.” - Robert E. Howard

"Only a rank degenerate would drive 1,500 miles across Texas and not eat a chicken fried steak." - Larry McMurtry

Everyone needs advice sometimes; but few are wise enough to seek it, and fewer still take it when nee needed. Indeed, there are few things less welcome than unsolicited advice: one would think it impolite to interfere with someone making a mistake, as though it were preferable to persist in error than be advised against it. (One cannot even offer a suggestion without being thought an officious intermeddler.) A word to the wise: if you must give advice to others, do it so they think it their own idea.

Much has been said lately about accountability. The first order of duty is accountability. To be accountable requires both performance and responsibility, for duty demands one account for one's actions or neglect for which no one else can be responsible. It is human nature to blame others for one's failings; but accountability and the burden of responsibility is not so easily shrugged off. Duty is an uncompromising taskmaster; it allows no excuse for failure to fulfill its obligations, and, like an unsatisfied creditor, keeps coming back to be paid. In the final account, one has either performed one's duty or not.

The greatest error in thinking I made as a young adult and continued to believe was that the average person on the street or anywhere else was inherently good. As I got older I realized that the average person you encounter is inherently evil with malicious intent and little if any integrity

Integrity is the sine qua non of character. Without it, you are nothing. Personal integrity begins with being true to oneself; for, as Shakespeare put it: "...thou canst not then be false to any man." Thus, integrity requires being honest with oneself and others. But just being honest is not enough: one must be willing to stand up for the truth and defend it. Only then can one be a person of integrity.

That is one of few statements I agree with 100%. Good stuff, Nemo

Accountability is being brave. Integrity is the gift for being brave enough to earn it.

I would not want to be young today but I certainly would like to redo my youth.
