what the 10 most dangerous citys have in common

Marketwatch posted a piece today listing the American cities where violent crime is most prevalent. The worst of the lot is Detroit, which was, 65 years ago, the wealthiest city per capita in the United States. Then comes Oakland, Memphis, St. Louis, Cleveland, Little Rock, Baltimore, Rockford in Illinois, Milwaukee, and Birmingham in Alabama.
The piece is an honest attempt to find what unites these cities. But it is skewed by its trust in the standard liberal cliches. So after specifying the crime rate, the population of the city, and the number of murders in 2013, it specifies the poverty rate — as if to imply that poverty is “the root cause” of crime. No other common denominator is mentioned.
And yet, apart from poverty, there is one other common characteristic uniting these communities — a characteristic that we are not allowed to talk about.

The entire OP is actually a direct quote of the article at the link. He should have put it in quotation marks.

And, the link goes on to explain that the characteristic no one wants to talk about is "race."

It's not a racist article, it's more about trying to figure out why there's such trouble. It's mostly about the family unit and how the vast majority of young black boys are growing up without two-parent families. I kind of understand that, because I watched a show once about young male elephants who grew up without fathers. They were just running rampant -- tearing through villages, destroying things. Then, they transferred some bull elephants into the areas where the young male elephants were running wild, and the bull elephants straightened them out, and it got better. So, I can see where that might be an issue with humans as well.

    At least to some extent.
