Post Housing discrimination goes high tech - How it threatens fair housing laws.

This falls into the "this isn't good" category: Housing discrimination goes high tech - How algorithms, ad targeting, and other new technologies threaten fair housing laws.

Read the article, there's some disturbing information here. Research from a team of Berkeley researchers released last month found that lenders using algorithms to generate decisions on loan pricing have discriminated against borrowers of color, resulting in a collective overcharge of $765 million each year for home and refinance loans. The analysis of roughly 7 million 30-year mortgages also found that both in-person and online lenders rejected a total of 1.3 million creditworthy applicants of color between 2008 and 2015.
We cannot let these practices creep back into our society.

Limited response, but personally found to be center point on a lot of questions regarding privacy... Facebook.

Mortgage feasibility algorithms should never factor in race, familial status, sex, or educational attainment. It should be illegal to factors those in.

    What should be factored in:
    • Duration at place of employment (usually a 6-month minimum).
    • Credit score.
    • Income to debt ratio.
    • Loan to value ratio.
    • Condition of the property.
The other thing is that financial planning should be a mandatory class in school.

Looks like another "disparate impact" scenario. We may as well abolish our laws against murder. They are putting a disproportionate number of black men in prison.

Berkeley Researchers? Yeah, I'll believe they are unbiased.

    From the article:

While the use of AI and sophisticated algorithms is relatively new, it’s a growing field that already has established legal precedent. In March of 2019, a Connecticut federal district court ruled that CoreLogic, a tenant screening company that utilizes data mining to evaluate potential renters, could be held liable for discrimination claims brought under the Fair Housing Act; the case alleged that CoreLogic’s system took arrest records, disability, race, and national origin into account, which are illegal.
The article is mainly about the use of AI in screening for housing loans. That paragraph cites the only instance where race was an input. But race was used for data mining which is not generally considered AI. My impression thus is that screening doesn't usually include race, which would be against the law.

Disparate Impact is how the government can make claims of discrimination without anyone actually discriminating. If a group is disproportionately impacted (in hiring, loans etc.) it's considered evidence of discrimination.

Made me immediately think of AOC's response to the food stamp deal from two weeks ago.
I am tired of everyone fighting with each other. This is all by design.

"Civil rights" laws should all be abolished.

You know in your soul that I'm right. It's just that there won't be any rewards for taking that position probably for decades.
