Don Imus, Shock Jock dead at 79

John Donald Imus (aka Don Imus), host of the long time radio and later television show "Imus In The Morning" has died at the age of 79. He went into the hospital Christmas eve and passed away this morning according to a family spokesperson.

He started his New York career at WNBC Radio in 1971, went back to Cleveland for two years and returned to the NY airwaves for good once again at WNBC Radio. He was the creator of"Billy Sol Hargis", a religious huckster and "Crazy Bob" who read demented fairy tales and a host of other characters.

Upon the station being sold in 1988, he stayed with the new owners who formatted the station as a sports talk station and shifted over to conservative talk style mixed with comedic bits and routines. He eventually took his show to the television airwaves that was filled with controversy at times, thus causing him to be fired for racist comments.

Imus retired in March, 2018.

Imus was a NYC disc jockey in the 70s on wnbc in nYC, which played rock, it was the most popular station in america. It had a whole line up of rockstar DJS each with their own personna.

I think he was 66 in NYC when I was a freshman and sophomore in high school. Same channel that aired the Mets games.

Yes, you are correct; he was at WNBC until it was sold in 1988 and it became WFAN (Sports talk format).

Wasn't he the one who was fired because he said the Rutger's women's basketball team looked like a bunch of nappy haired ho's? He was accused of racism although he had described the UT's team as a bunch of good looking young ladies. They were as black as Rutgers team.
