New mathematical model predicts a knots stability

    https://phys-org.cdn.ampproject.org/...stability.html

In sailing rock climbing, construction, and any activity requiring the securing of ropes, certain knots are known to be stronger than others. Any seasoned sailor knows, for instance, that one type of knot will secure a sheet to a headsail, while another is better for hitching a boat to a piling.

I was in Air Assault Units (as well as Airborne). Back in the day we repelled out of helicopters, off buildings, and cliffs. We didn't use commercial harnesses. We used burlap rope. So we had to know how to tie the correct knot- the article calls it a reef knot. If you get it wrong, you get a granny knot- that that will not hold when you go. In Air Assault School it is a auto-fail if you don't tie your knot correctly.

We also did Australian-style rappelling back then. The Army stopped doing that in the 1990s sometime. But they added fast-roping. I never did that.
