Provoking a less than perfectly stable nation into defending its honor - face saving, is bound to result in unpredictable consequences. This is a known fact, which is why proxies are used and the puppeteers don't publicly out themselves. Trump may feel that being a bull in a china shop is the 'direct' approach, but in reality how people react when forced to react, can be unpredictable and that is foreseeable. Certainly Trump was assured that there would be no direct consequence to America. Iran is not that powerful, but there is no way to examine this issue that doesn't ultimately conclude that being circumspect would have preserved the lives of those unwitting passengers and flight crew.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.
