Of course it's about trade and not war. We intend to keep the South China Sea open for trade. No, the countries there don't get to decide. The whole world trades.

We gave the Panama Canal back on the condition that it not block anyone's ships.

China also (as your biggest trading partner) , has no desire nor intention to close the South China Sea trading routes . Both countries would suffer economically . The US strategy has more to do with containing China , and hampering their growth , rather than protecting the trading route through the Sth China Sea.

The US never owned it.....it was bankrolled and built by America under a legally binding arrangement with Panama , for the use of all countries , to enable more cost effective global trade. It was a great example of both engineering , and co-operation between countries , for the benefit of all global traders.

As of 2014, the Panama Canal is owned and controlled by Panama. The United States owned and operated the canal until 1999. The United States gave control over to Panama step by step starting in 1979, and full ownership was given to Panama on December 31, 1999

We owned it. We took the land from Columbia, We set up a farcical government. We decided everything about the Canal and Panama. The treaty had no end date. There was no reason to give it back. If there was, it should have been given back to Columbia.

Now, see how facts always trumps opinion?
