It is an abbreviation. It is not a pejorative.

There are many abbreviations used with regard to human beings, that through negative common use, have become pejoratives. Homo is one of them. No one during WWII used the term "nip" iro the Japanese respectfully. Yet it is an abbreviation of Nipponese. The abbreviation "paki", has never been a respectful diminutive of Pakistani.
The term "homo" carries inherent judgment by virtue of the negative context in which it has been commonly used. Even the urban dictionary references "homo" as a derogative reference to people (usually males) attracted to the same sex.
