A moral quandary Amazon put me in

I have a moral quandary Amazon put me in.

I get my box of items I ordered and in with them there is a Seagate portable drive of 2T capacity.

I never ordered it, somehow it wound up in my box.

I call Amazon and the heavy accented Indian lady on the other line says she will handle my problem, if i would just tell her the order number.
I told her again, there is no order number because i did not order it.
I gave her the order number of other items in the box and she says she can find no match.
Of course there is no match, I did not order it.
...and so this back-and-forth went on two more times.
Supervisor comes on, yes Sir, (equally heavy Indian accent) what is your order number so I can help you.

    I hung up.

It has a UPS cord to it and 2T is pretty big.

Should i keep it or figure another way to get it back to them?

The devil in me says "keep it"

The angel in me says keep it because you tried and they are the ones not listening to you.

So, I have heard from the devil and angel in me, what say you?

I recieved a box from some company that sold these vitamin pills. It had the wrong address on it and then a label with my address partially covering it. The other address did not exist, so I tried to call the company and got nothing but an answering machine.
I figured I made a reasonable attempt to find the owner and contact the company. I threw the box away without ever looking to see what was inside. I knew is was calcium pills or something along those lines.

You got a $100 item and you do not need to spend $100 in effort to return it. You tried. I would consider it to be mine based on the cost. I would value my effort based on the value of the item. You should not pay for their mistake.

I have delivered items in the neighborhood because of a simple address or delivery error so I have the same guilt issue in keeping something you are also going to tie up $100 in their effort before this is all through as well as yours and they are going to want you to box it up and bring it to UPS after you print out their label and....

I am trying to clear it with Karma, so it does not come back on me.

...then again....maybe Karma sent it to me.

I think you took reasonable efforts to return it.

LOL send it to me I'm always running out of space for my photography. Joking. Amazon now has drop off locations at Kohl's for instance but returning a mistake isn't listed. I'd email their support online and see what they say, I've done that with a few items. But you made me think of my mother who was a saint, she'd preach till I walked it back.

Dealing with Amazon, I've had much more success communicating with them by email than by phone. Personally, I would go that route and if they still couldn't understand what I was talking about I'd have no problem keeping the thing.

Donating it is exactly what I did when I received something I didn't order, though it was likely of lesser value than a 2T hard drive.

Chances are their solution would be to have you keep it anyways. Maybe try one more time with the Indians, then call it a day. Maybe see if you can speak to an American Indian, lol.
