...and I love Star Trek...especially the Second Generation.
The first generation had the sexy legs, but crappy props.

The second generation discarded the sexy legs but was much better overall in everything else.

NOTE: The sexy legs in the first generation was nice to see, but I doubt anyone would approve of cheerleader suits as a United Federation of Planets uniform.

Interesting to find once again that Marx was an individualist.

Oh, we're headed that way? Where has Marxism succeeded? Or are we awaiting the collapse of capitalism still?
Who is talking about Marxism? Marxism would be as redundant as capitalism in a society where we have beaten all scarcity through technology. The word economy would become an anachronism. Collectivism is defined as the theory and practice of the ownership of land and the means of production by the people or the state. The means of production would now no longer need the land or anything upon it or in it and the physical means of production would be replicators, which intrinsically would cost nothing if we have conquered the ability to harness energy from the environment and even build the replicators out of thin air. Even barter requires that someone have something you want. If we have conquered the all of the reasons for any form of scarcity, then what? On what basis do we organize ourselves and to what do we aspire? We no longer have to literally or even metaphorically scratch at the dirt to ensure a good life.

The society depicted in Star Trek is a post-scarcity world. No one on Star Trek earns money - they join 'the fleet' because they are interested in exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilizations and boldly going where no man has gone before. The author suggests that the new currency in a post-scarcity world is intellectual curiosity or developing your natural talents, regardless of whether it's going into space or cultivating plants.

Uh, you are, Who. Once again it comes out that these ideas you post, whether you're aware of channeling him, derive from Marx and already have been shown a failure. There will nor can be no post-scarce society as you imagine. All the woulds of that paragraph are imaginary--and the last two sentences need woulds in them.

They are actually doing what you suppose is impossible but don't worry, you will probably be dead before any change happens that challenges your preconceived notions.

They would barter/trade just like they used to. It would change things though. I don't know if Bill Gates would have built Microsoft in exchange for a million head of Cattle. This forum could become a slate in the center of town that you write on when you go to trade your corn.

It's sad, but you should have made it a tPF thread @Dr. Who. Some people just want to argue simply because they get triggered over the name of the person creating the thread. You clearly said what if money went away but we were afforded our materialistic needs by a replicator, yet somehow people want to argue about marxism or unicorns.
“Conscientiously believing that the proper condition of the negro is slavery, or a complete subjection to the white man, and entertaining the belief that the day is not distant when the old Union will be restored with slavery nationally declared to be the proper condition of all of African descent, and in view of the future harmony and progress of all the States of America, I have been induced to issue this address, so that there may be no misunderstanding in the future”
