Post Astros 2017 WS Championship - Strip it?

At the gym today, I saw on SECSPN where Astros players wore buzzers under their shirts to tell them the pitch (I couldn't tell if alleged or true). So, they won the 2017 World Series. I think that the Commissioner should strip the World Series Title from the Astros and award it 1/2 to the Bosox and 1/2 to the Yankees.

    Thoughts?

Note: this is a 'tpf' thread.

I don't believe that will happen. From a strictly cynical perspective, MLB would never do anything to hurt the Game's image; they're hoping that fans will just forget about this and move on, as most of us will. Sign-stealing using devices has been officially banned since at least the early '60s, but it's not in the official Rules of Baseball, which makes the prohibition a sort of secondary authority situation.

I dont believe in stripping and vacating. The fact is it happened. Erasing facts from history is what they did the Soviet Union. I say let it stand and let people talk about it

It seems no one really cares about the rules anymore. I guess we should change the maxim "All's fair in love and war" to "All's fair, if you don't get caught at it"

Can it even be said with any certainty that the Astros would not have won the series in any case?

No one is condoning cheating of this nature; careers have been severely tarnished or ruined, sanctions have been placed and substantial fines levied. If the Astros management is smart and even marginally classy, they will take down their stadium's 2017 WS pennant.

I can't be said with any certainty that they would not have won without cheating but it can be said with certainty that they won with cheating. They should not get the fruits of that cheating. I still say strip it or asterisk it. Maybe you are correct - the Astros should vacate it and pretend it didn't happen.

Maybe, but the Astros still win the series. Team titles shouldn't be taken away.

Just a couple of thoughts here:

    (1) I really do not know if this allegation is true or not. And I am just not a fan of the "guilty until proven innocent" standard.

    (2) In any case, why should the Boston Red Sox or the New York Yankees be favored over the Los Angeles Dodgers (who were the National League champions--and the Astros' opponent in the World Series)?

Oh, one other thing: I simply cannot imagine that a team that did not win the championship on the field would be altogether sanguine with its simply being awarded something that it did not earn.

    1. Agreed, but I believe it's been proven.
    2. Good point. Great point actually. How did I miss that? Too busy? Bosox / NY b/c the Astros beat them but you're right that was in the AL side.
    3. My partner (law, not lifestyle) thinks the title should be blank for that year.
