Underground chamber found under palace of Emperor Nero

Underground chamber found under palace of Emperor Nero

I have been there a few times. But the palace was filled with rock at dirt after Nero's death. And then the structures we see today were built on top of it. I guess the local mobs missed this underground chamber.

A mysterious underground chamber has been discovered under the palace of Roman Emperor Nero, a secret that had been kept for almost 2,000 years.

The chamber, which was found by archaeologists who were working on restorations of the Domus Aurea palace late last year, also contains walls that are adorned with real and mythical creatures, such as a "silent and solitary sphinx," according to a translated statement discussing the find.

"The discovery of this room is part of the scientific research strategy that the Park carries out every day together with the safety and restoration interventions," Alfonsina Russo, director of the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum, explained in the statement. "In the dark for almost 20 centuries, the Sala della Sfinge [Sphinx room] – as we have called it – tells us about the atmosphere of the years of the principality of Nero."

MY question on places like this are how did they make it livable? How did they light up the place enough for it to be useful for example. How did they move the air in and out when this place was packed with people? How did they heat and cool it?

    Interesting stuff in my opinion.

They had very high ceilings which helps with air flow. I suspect they had fireplaces all around for the winter. And Rome doesn't get extreme heat or cold.

I've heard that is how they got light into the burial chambers of the pyramids in order to paint the walls and put up the gold etc.

I know a common practice was to put a mirror behind a candle flame which doubled or even tripled the amount of light given off. I also remember one service they had at First Baptist Jacksonville (a huge auditorium with about 10,000 seats). They turned all the lights off and gave each of us a small candle. With 10,000 candle power the place became very bright (it also heated up a bit!)

I recall reading about the "Battle of the Crater" in Petersburg, during the Civil war. The Confederates had a fort on a hill overlooking the Federal lines and impeding their progress. To remove the fort the Feds used the Pennsylvania troops that were opposing the fort. These Pennsylvanians were coal miners and they were used to dig a long tunnel under the fort, stack it with black powder and set fuses for a simultaneous explosion.
During the tunnel dig it was found that they needed some way to get air in to diggers so they could keep working. They solved this by digging some vents along the mine and lighting fires at the other end. Hot air rises and as it did it drew in fresh air. It worked.
The out come of the explosion was that it was the largest in the world at that time, and it completely destroyed the fort. I walked in that crater knowing there were guns and men still buried under my feet. It was eerie.
Anyhow my point was not to write this much but to show that fire can be used to move air and I'm sure the Romans knew that.

That is interesting. I have been there as well and never heard that story about the venting.
