I wouldnt recommend any ride service for women that are alone, it seems anyone can be an uber driver, cabbies have to be at least license to drive in every town or city they "pickup in" they can dropoff anywhere, in licensing they get background checks.
Some taxi companies are daily leases for cabbies, others are fare share where the owner an cabbie split the fares at the end of the shift, cabbie pays for gas, owner pays maintenance. I think a regular cab service has an edge on safety for lets say lone female riders.

I agree that woman should not take ride sharing services alone but some of those incidents also happen in regular cabs.
There are 8 to ten thousand Taxi accidents in NYC every year.
Driving a taxi is one of the top 20 deadliest jobs in the USA.
Taxi drivers are the most likely job in the US to be murdered.
We are not talking ride sharing here. These are the pros. The pros that make an average of about $22,000 a year but consider that most taxis are in high rent areas so these are not the cream of the crop.
Stepping outside of the house is not very safe but then your gas line could blow also.

...and yet when i was a kid, they told us to NEVER...EVER...get in a vehicle with a stranger.
Now we call them to do just that?
