Post When the Soviet Union Paid Pepsi in Warships

When the Soviet Union Paid Pepsi in Warships. This is an interesting story. Short on international money, the USSR negotiated a deal in 1989 to pay Pepsi in 17 old submarines, a frigate, a cruise and a destroyer.

What the hell will Pepsi do with Soviet warships? Attack Coca Cola on the high seas?

Look at this photo -- talk about product placement?

In the early 1990's I had a client from Russia who wanted to buy up candy and chips etc that would go in vending machines. We actually arranged the purchases from Winn Dixie. I told him the stuff from WD was barely edible but he said the Russians would think it was the food of the gods since they couldn't get anything like that. He said the Russian people wouldn't get enough of these items.. We then arranged it to be prepared for shipping and for the delivery to the docks to be loaded on the ships. While he was here he said he wanted to go to Disney World in Orlando. I told him if he did that was something even his country's leadership had been unable to do when they visited in the early 1960's. He had no idea what I was talking about! I think Khrushchev's name was removed from all history books in the Soviet Union and this 30 year old man had no knowledge of what had happened a mere 30 something years previously.

Oh, and BTW, I know that Pepsi sold the ships as scrap (at least that is what they would have you believe!)
