I wouldn't use a .gif file if I wanted to store a good quality image unless it's really a graphic, like a logo. Jpgs have variable compression, so you can choose the level of compression that allows the image to remain crisp.

Png is great image format, but can't always be read by web sites or web browsers. Copy and paste it and if the software receiving it doesn't recognize it, you could end up with a page of code - it is often code intensive.

IMHO, if you want an image that can be easily copied and pasted into a web site, jpg is the format that is most likely to be recognized by the majority of web software.

png files take a lot of space so if you are uploading then it does not makes sense to use it. Jpeg (same thing as jpg) is still the best all around. If you are not printing the images then the quality of the images is going to be restricted by the monitor so high quality does not do much for you. It's like buying good quality bourbon and putting it in coke.

Agreed. Jpg is the most popular format in terms of web images. If you are storing personal pics at home, you can use the more data intensive formats, probably because you might want to either print them or convert them to some kind of animated presentation one day. You can compress a large file, but you can't expand a minimal file. So it really depends on what you want to do with that image. Png and Bmp are options in software like Photoshop for people who may want to enlarge the scale of pictures for reproduction - they are data intensive and take more space to store.

Jpg is the workhorse format. It is flexible enough to create a fairly large complex image that can be printed without pixelation but can also store good quality smaller images for web use or simply 5X9 or 3X5 photo size images.

I use Photoshop CS6, but it’s the free portable one, no passwords and it doesn’t even install, it’s free standing. This is the professional one and at under 500MB if anyone wants it I’m quite willing to send them a copy if we can find a way to do it. To upload, use a free site such as ImgBB and use the forum url on the images to do it.

I looked Photoshop CS6 up and it seems it is only free for a trial version. Do you have one that is free and not as a free trial period?

Yes, a free one, no trial, had it for several years. In fact the only drawback is when using it you have to disconnect from the Internet because otherwise you get pop-up spam from Abode telling you to buy an installed one.
