Population Control Isn't the Answer to Climate Change. Capitalism Is.

Long video, a whopping 13 minutes. So to summarize, it argues against reducing population directly, following Mathusean reasoning, to solve climate chage issues. It argues capitalism can solve those issues. Capitalism provides the innovation necessary to reducing and otherwise adapting to climate change. But also capitalism brings prosperity that tends to naturally reduce population. Wealthy nations are nearing population peak.

I removed the video from my response.

As the Baby Boomers (largest generation)move out of the reproduction stage of their lives, the generations have dwindled following. Some by indirect planning, i.e. career first, and fertility reduction by the time it did come to have kids.

Add in environmental causes reducing fertility, the need for many kids (infant mortality) and the numbers will continue to drop.

You can't count just the Western nations regarding the population. India and China have far larger populations than those industrialized nations. The answer for them as well is capitalism for all the reasons stated above.

The real issue is third-world nations that will have to depend on fossil-based energy for a couple few more decades in order to become prosperous enough.

Funding greater access to birth control and education for women in developing countries was also a recommendation of the Bioscience paper. It's also a policy agenda of the U.N. and many leading NGOs like the Bill and Melina Gates Foundation.

Nordhaus says such measures can help at the margins but ultimately miss the big picture, which is that as wealth increases, fertility rates naturally fall as families invest more resources in fewer children.

"The real drivers of longterm fertility decline and population stabilization around the world are just kind of garden variety economic development, which a lot of the same people signing those documents are actually saying is the problem not the solution," says Nordhaus.

But Nordhaus points out that when poor societies become wealthy there are more people positioned to help solve environmental problems in the only way that really works—with new technology.

"Wealthier, more developed societies are both better positioned to adapt to issues, to problems like climate change and climate impacts," says Nordhaus. "They are also better positioned to develop and deploy new technology."

And so Nordhaus advocates for greater reliance on clean, abundant energy like nuclear power to fuel advanced economies towards possibly innovating even lower impact alternatives. But the third-world may still need to rely on traditional fossil fuels on its path to prosperity and population stabilization.

"When you get down to the bottom of it, it is just ultimately a question of how rapidly Africa develops economically," says Nordhaus.

Bailey says environmentalists such as Naomi Klein, who argue that capitalism and the health of the planet are at war, have the formula backwards.

"[Klein] wants to replace it with some sort of communitarian socialism. I would suggest to you that doing that would exactly bring back the Malthusian conditions that we used to live in," says Bailey......snip~

If we believe global warming/climate change exists and further, that it’s caused by humans, we have to also acknowledge that the more of us there are, the worse it’s going to get and so there’s nothing we can do about it. In other words, if it’s already here it isn’t going to go away.

There again, perhaps any climate changes are natural as the earth naturally warms and cools in cyclic periods that last centuries. Capitalism is an economic system, it doesn’t solve anything. What it does is provide wealth producing ownership. As for innovation being the prerogative of countries with capitalist economic systems, the first man in space was Yuri Gagarin, a Russian during the USSR communist period.

I’ll go for the theory that we’re overpopulated. Every previous generation had its wars, plagues and often genocides. Perhaps that was nature’s way of culling the populations to manageable levels? We’re now breeding like rabbits and capitalism isn’t going to adapt to something it wasn’t intended for. India and China both have capitalist economies, but it didn’t prevent the latest virus from starting. Come the day when scientists can’t find a cure and like the post first world war influenza epidemic, nature will once again intervene and stop us breeding ourselves into extinction.

It seems to me that whatever the specific issues for these experts, they are self-correcting regardless of what they do, and if they aren't self correcting, nothing can be done about them anyway.

IMO if we don't control our population we will have much bigger problems than the seas rising an inch a decade. While Corona is no Spanish flu, thank God, mother nature will cook something much worse up to control our numbers if we fail to. And population density will be the vector she uses
