    One a boat...about a week.

So far all of them have been very yummy.
They have become my breakfast routine.

The usual Texas breakfast of hash browns, eggs, bacon, sausage gravy & biscuits is pure heaven, but will also get me there very soon too....or maybe somewhere else.

These are a healthier alternative, and pretty balanced.

I am sure others have known this for years, but I am also starting to really enjoy a hot cup of coffee in the still of the morning from the coffee & cream packets in them. Sipping on a cup right now.

Survival food is not meant to be stowed away for an emergency.

It was meant to be stowed away and rotated out to keep it fresh and current, and to weed out what tastes good and what you can put aside to trade for later, if necessary.

So many preppers put away a lot of food and think they are fine.
Only to find out later it has mostly gone bad because they did not actually eat it and rotate it out, or it tastes like crap even on its best day.

MREs last on average five years.
I have one year's worth, but rotate them out by eating them.
Then put more away to replenish what I ate.

When the meteor hits and everyone is starving, is not the time to find out most of your food is now poisonous and will kill you because you just kept it stuck away in the bowels of the basement....just in case....8 years ago.

You can do that with the 35 year self life freeze dried stuff in the #10 cans, but not MREs and canned goods.
    You gotta eat em'.

Canned veggies have the added advantage of having healthy sealed away water in them to drink too.

That can of string beans or corn has at least 4 ounces of good healthy water in it for you.
It also has the nutrients of the vegetable that has been floating around in it too.
    win-win.

I write the expiration date on top of every can with a Sharpie and then put them in the back and start eating from the front. But note: The expiration date does not mean it is bad. it means it is "best by". Some of those dates are also artificially shortened to get you to by more when you do not have to.

This is why I am eating my "survival rations". It is because they are not survival rations at all. They are part of my regular food supply.

HINT: Pace picante sauce in an unopened jar lasts about two years and is a great source of fresh vegetables when there may not be any around.

Here is how I know....A shipmate of mine from Texas bought a case of PACE picante sauce right before a major deployment to enjoy for the time we were gone. he wound up not re-enlisting and decided to go home about half-way through the det. Not till about two years later during an intensive field day did some one find his case of PACE in a fan room. I said, "what the hell, and opened a jar, and tasted a small bit of it. It was just fine.

Don't get me to lieing and ask me how much longer it would have lasted, but I DO KNOW it will last two years if unopened.
Once found, those seven jars he had left only lasted a few days. Few things compare to an omlette drowned in about two inches deep of PACE picante sauce.

    Fresh veggies keep away scurvy.

Another advantage of MREs over others is you have everything you need right in that bag.
    The main dish
    its heater
    a spoon
    seasonings
    dessert
    a snack
    TP
    a napkin
    candy and/or gum
    coffee cream & sugar
    matches
    ...and a drink.

Not only that you can use the bag to collect water in if need be.

You can also use the heater as a heating pad and save yourself from frostbite.

    Alll in one little bag.

You convinced me that I need something with longer shelf life. I am going on Amazon and ordering a pallet of Twinkies.

Twinkies - fondly referred to as 'dashboard food'. They used to be a staple of life. Now, I don't think there is a substance contained in them that resembles anything called food.

    Healthier alternative..... to what??

I have some canned goods, freeze dried goodies, and dry goods. We have left over 'camp packs' from a couple of years ago that were considered the 'gourmet' version of MREs, but never ended up eating them.

I understand what you are saying.... perhaps I will need to send you my stash, so you can do the rotation for me. I'm sure they aren't 5 years old yet. Maybe. I hope.

The belief is that archeologists will be digging up Twinkies in 1000 years and they will still be just as edible as they are when they are fresh. I'm not sure that they are a good plan for controlling my blood sugar.

Anything over a 12 year supply is a waste. AOC says we are all going to burst into flames.

The packs I bought say they are good for 25 years and I have not even thought about them. I think I'll join your experiment sometime this year and plan on trying and replenishing samples every few years to make sure they were not wrong about the 25 years.

Probably. If stored properly, some of them have a shelf life of up to 25 years.
