I certainly don't want to saddle my family with having to do it when I eventually assume room temperature. It's certainly not one of those 'Hoarders: Buried Alive' situations, but I do have too much in the way of material possessions cluttering up a few rooms in the house, and I seriously need to devote at least a good part of my weekends to bearing down on the problem instead of watching old movies and goofing off.
Being much closer to dusk rather than dawn, I've embarked on the tedious task of getting rid of almost all of my material possessions. I don't want to leave that job to my son. In reality, I don't need much to survive comfortably and most of what I've collected has meaning only to me. I've been 25 years in my current residence and I certainly don't need almost 3,000 square feet and an acre plus of ground to maintain. It would be nice to pack my belongings in my pick-up.

I knew a few guys like that in the Navy. Single, unattached, and when they were sent to a new duty station they just tossed their stuff in the car and took off.

There was a time when the only possessions that meant anything to me at all was a small stack of my favorite books. I moved back to my home town and I was close enough for gift giving. Soon my house was filled to the brim. It is really complicated at least for me to get rid of something that someone else gave you with love and kind intentions.

But, I needed to sell my house, so I got rid of nearly everything, even most of the gifts. I offered them back to the people who gave them to me, that was really hard and it didn't feel very good. Everyone was understanding, I needed to downsize.

I told myself, I am giving away this gift that this person gave me with their kind intentions, but I am not getting rid of it from my heart, that is where it counts. I will always appreciate the love that went into it all. I kept one small sparkly heart ornament that my grandmother gave me when I first moved into my house. I kept one sparkly flower my mother gave me. To me they represent all of the gifts and kindness they ever gave me.

This was how I was able to let all of the stuff go. It was hard actually. But once the house was near empty it felt so freeing, and clean, and uncluttered. But slowly I have more stuff again than I would like.

It is true most of our things only have meaning to us, others might not know what memories that we have attached to our items, after all that is what gives them their meaning.

There was also the fact that nothing is ours. We actually don't own anything, we cant take any of it with us when we go. Our only true possesion is our actions because those remain in the world even after we part.

No worries E, I am under no such delusions "about me being a good person". It was a kind comment he made though, and I did appreciate it. I was just being honest in the OP, and it is an interesting conversation, at least it is to me. Also Cotton does seem like he has a good heart. You don't have to be a perfect person to have a good heart or to have goodness.
