His poll numbers didn’t go up, so I don’t know where you think that strengthening came from. Considering that more people supported impeachment than opposed it (even after the Senate vote) and that it exposed a lot of Trump’s petty corruption to a broader audience, I don’t think that there’s any basis for arguing that it benefitted him.

Aggregate polling is always going to be far more accurate than cherry-picked individual polls. The fact is that Trump saw a tiny (1 or 2 point) increase during impeachment that almost immediately disappeared and his numbers have improved by only 3 points with the current crisis (and have started to go back down this week). Even with his current three-point “spike” Trump is still the only president in history (since they began polling) to have never topped 50% in aggregate approval polling.

Lol. On the day the formal impeachment inquiry was launched, his aggregate net approval was 42.9. On the day he was impeached, it was 43.8. On the day the Senate voted not to remove him from office, it was at 43.5. On March 14, it was at 42.3 (so lower than before impeachment began). Today, it’s at 45.3. His approval is up a whopping 3 points. That’s nothing compared with virtually every other increase for prior presidents during a national crisis.

No, what that means is that, on average, pollsters have a demonstrated 3.5% bias toward Republicans. 538 adjusts the polling results based on historical differences between prior polling and actual results. (And understand that, in statistical terms, bias does not mean some sort of intentional act. It simply means that the data tends to deviate from actual by that percentage.)
