'Historic figure': Trump will be hailed for defeating virus, rescuing economy, predicts Gingrich

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich predicted Thursday that President Trump would be remembered by future generations as a “historic figure” for his response to the coronavirus crisis. “He is extraordinarily energetic. He is learning at an extraordinary pace,” Mr. Gingrich told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. “And he’s an historic figure, and I think that by the time this is over, as he defeats the virus, pivots and relaunches the economy, people will realize how important it was that we had Donald Trump at this moment in American history.”

At the same time, Mr. Gingrich blasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for saying Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that “as the president fiddles, people are dying,” calling her “despicable.”

Gingrich should have talked about the travel ban that Trump initiated with China on Jan 30th.

Then mentioned the fact that up until Trump imposes that travel ban on China. No other Western country at that time had done so. They all followed Trump after Jan 30th.

Should he have talked about the fact that hundreds of thousands of people had already come into the US from China in the period after the virus was discovered, and before the Trump ban went into effect, so the ban was basically locking the door after the virus was already well established here? Should he have talked about how 40,000 people came into the US from China after the ban went into effect, many without screening, so, in practice, the ban was like locking the door and leaving the window wide open?

Jeez, I wish you would post this accurately MMC. Come on, you know better.

The Trump administration did impose travel restrictions between China and the U.S., and later Europe and the U.S., but both actions have loopholes large enough to fly a 777 through. In the case of China, on Jan. 31 — weeks after it was known that the coronavirus was a serious problem — the administration restricted travel for “foreign nationals who had been in China in the last 14 days.”

That means that Americans — just as capable as carrying and transmitting a contagious viral infection as foreigners — had free passage between China and the U.S. And so daily flights between China and the U.S. continued. (And yes, even these limited restrictions were slammed as being too punitive at the time.)
The Trump administration’s alleged Europe travel ban, announced to much fanfare earlier this month, is similarly weak. It too exempts Americans from any restrictions whatsoever, and the screening that returning Americans have been subjected to at airports has been laughably weak. Passengers have been given a form to fill out (which many travelers have reported aren’t even being collected), waved through immigration, and then simply urged to self-quarantine. It’s like the honor system, but for containing a deadly pandemic.

When was it discovered? we don't know because China was lying to us. Your are literally asking why we did not block travel from other countries before we were informed they had a problem that was anything but a flu strain.

Mr. Governor, the ban was in January. The spread really didn't start until March.

What? They don't teach you how to read calendars at Harvard?

Oh, and just saying what you want to hear doesn't make what you say right or correct, Professor. You need to PROVE with a reliable (read NON LIBERAL) link that after the travel band, somehow 40,000 people came into the US from China. You need to document the source and how that precise 40,000 figure was arrived upon.

See how messy it gets when you just make everything up?
