SARS-CoV-2 is thought to use ACE2 as a viral receptor, which is a cell receptor for viral entry. The ACE2-expressing cells in lung tissues are more pronounced in East Asians than other populations, according to preliminary studies. Africans are more susceptible to Covid-19 than Caucasians but much less so than East Asians, based on allele frequencies of ACE2 (Fig. 1c).

The East Asian populations have much higher AFs in the eQTL variants associated with higher ACE2 expression in tissues (Fig. 1c), which may suggest different susceptibility or response to 2019-nCoV/SARS-CoV-2 from different populations under the similar conditions.

Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, I heard a show on Texas Public Radio that discussed how for the same diseases Hispanics tend to see the same results, not more susceptibility but a higher morbidity. It was mainly their physical attributes, IIRC, but also not being as informed and also culturally disposed to not paying attention. So what Fauci says sounds reasonable. I know, from a news conference, he spent time with the NAACP to try and help them get the message out.

Here's the show: Texas Matters: Alzheimer's Disease And Latinos. While the focus was on Alzheimer's Disease, a variety of topics came up: "There are other factors that may put some Latinos at increased risk, including low socioeconomic status, lots of cardiovascular disease, and a higher prevalence of conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and depression. Latinos also tend to develop symptoms at a younger age than non-Latino whites." You'll have to listen to the audio to get to the cultural issues.
