I can only speak for myself here, so I will, even though my position on a number of issues is far from being "left". I support a Muslim individual's right to equal treatment and due process because the U.S. Constitution guarantees it and because it's the right thing to do. An adherent of Islam who has no personal ties to terrorism is guilty of nothing. Is such support unreasonable or un-American?
As for "coddling", the abhorrent practices of some Muslim communities and individuals - the persecution of homosexuals, the denial of rights and dignity to women, female circumcision and so-called "honor killings" (both of which practices cross religious lines and are repudiated by many Muslim scholars) - not only are those things campaigned against by "the left", and organizations dedicated to stopping them led and manned overwhelmingly by liberals, but liberals are in the forefront in calling for the criminal prosecution of crimes related to those practices.
