They probably were not gone, they probably relocated to vegetation where they couldn't be readily seen. They blend in very well with foliage.

4 Ways to Take Care of a Praying Mantis - wikiHow

    https://www.wikihow.com/Take-Care-of-a-Praying-Mantis
Oct 21, 2019 · To take care of a praying mantis, feed it a diet of fruit flies and gnats if it’s a baby, or butterflies and crickets if it’s fully grown. You should also water your mantis by spraying the inside of glass or plastic tanks with a spray bottle, or placing a water bottle lid full of water inside the enclosure if it’s made from wire.

I scooped up as many as I could and put them in my garden. The next day they were all gone! Don't know if they moved to other gardens or if, like the tropical fish, the birds got them all (hell they were even attacking each other!)
I would have burned the house down.

Good stuff, but I have enough to last about 10 lifetimes because it doesn't take much, at least the way I use it.
Lol, that reminds me of the 5 gallon bucket of Nacho Cheese dip you had back in the day.

Why would you want to keep it captive?

My wife suggested it. However, I had an HO Scale railroad in the bedroom that I didn't want to lose.

If someone has kids they could put them in charge of catching butterflies and crickets. Keep em outta trouble, of course.
