    2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The IOC Executive Board reviewed the bids from all applicant cities on 7 July 2014, and selected three cities, Oslo (Norway), Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Beijing (China) as the final candidates.

Several cities withdrew their applications during the bidding process, citing the high costs or the lack of local support for hosting the Games. Oslo, which had been considered the clear frontrunner, withdrew after its application to the Norwegian parliament for funding of the Olympics was rejected. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Winter_Olympics

Athens, I read, went $ billions over budget for the 2004 Summer Olympics. They've had terrible financial trouble in years since.

The Olympics have always been primarily a prestigious extravagance for host countries that are no longer affordable for many countries. Some think the Olympics are coming to a permanent end.

    What do you think?

The Olympics don't have to end, the various venues can be held in separate countries which would cut costs hugely.

The US and Europe should demand just that. China should be ass-kicked everyday.

Cities that host the Olympics need to have a post-games plan to use the facilities. And the games could easily be spread out.

Excellent idea. The opening and closing ceremonies are the only thing that would be lost but it's a small world now and doesn't have the impact of showcasing different cultures anymore.

The opening ceremonies wouldn't be lost on me, I never watched, kinda like the hours and hours of Superbowl pregame coverage.

The Olympics are the outstanding source of nonmilitaristic national identity and pride, especially for the festive host country. I've always been a huge fan, and regret the bad times as have arisen in recent decades for apparently nonpolitical reasons.

They need to cut construction costs.

World class athletes shouldn't have to compete against bling.
