It would certainly happen because it already has. God sent his only begotten Son to earth for our salvation and he was executed for his troubles. There are those who would not believe in his divinity and even if true would jeopardize their authority and power. Then there are those who believe that God, in the form of Christ Jesus will return to the earth and would know and understand the truth. One could write an entire doctoral dissertation on the whys and not fully cover the topic.
