    Watching Grant now. Not bad.

    Very true.
Some consider it blasphemy to be critical of Lee, but Lee was a Napoleonic style general and Grant was a total war general like Sherman.

Lee would fight and retire to fight again later.
Grant would hit, hit, and hit again whether he won or lost. Did not matter.

I feel there was one personally defining moment with Grant that determined the entire war.

When he and his troops scaled a hill to fight the rebs on the other side, he saw they had unassed the area and were gone.

He felt then, they were more afraid of what he was going to do to them, than what they were going to do to him.

When your enemy runs from you, even once, you know you can beat them.

...at that moment, the civil war was lost for the rebs.

If only because Grant could afford to accept high losses for little gain.

That was exactly it. he was called a butcher by both sides.

...but the war had to be ended, and the Yankees had the material and the manpower.

There is a story of the rebs shelling and setting afire a Yankee supply depot, and with the fire blazing they could smell all the smoked hams, bacon, and coffee burning up and they wanted to go down there and put out the fires and save some of it.

Few things smell better than coffee and bacon cooking.

    O. IC. Then they couldn't have sacked Washington? I'm not going to argue or research it, but your view is not consistent with many.

The History Channel recently had a series on Washington. He and Lee fought similarly, I think, as you say "fight and retire to fight again later."

You all realize that the USA could have let the CSA go and not kill hundreds of thousands?
