I love historical shows like this. Even though people don't get thrown back like that when they are shot.
I find your lack of faith...disturbing...

Ron Chernow talks about his Grant:
Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire. ― Gustav Mahler
Grant was a better general than Lee. No one can dispute that. I don't think that the Union could have won the war without Grant.
Owing to the outcome he brought to the Civil War, Grant was arguably the most popular president in US history besides Washington, another general.
Patton was likewise hugely popular in the states and similarly destined, but he was killed under controversial and suspicious circumstances.
Grant's popularity was apparently also a magnet for crooks and shysters, as his presidential tenure was very corrupt. He wasn't but the people around him were.

Lee's biggest failure was not allowing Forrest more authority and manpower to conduct raids against the Union. Forrest paid for most of his troops on his own.
BTW, as an aside of the North being so pro civil rights it should be noted white Union soldiers were paid $13.00 a month but black soldiers were only paid $7.00 a month until 1864.
