    Cutting dog toenails

Jesus H Cotton. Has anyone seen the tv ads where they are trying to sell nail clippers for dogs? It totally makes me cringe. Dogs are a trip. They can't even cut their own nails! I had dog nightmarws last night. In part of the dream a very furry white poodle was walking up and down a wall. Weird

Lol, my Saints cringe when they see e coming with the clippers. It is important to ensure the nails don't grow too long, which can make the toes bend unnaturally. Dogs are different -- even within the same breed -- when it comes to how fast their toenails grow. As long as the nails are white -- they're translucent and you can see the quick within the nail and not hit it. All Saint toes are white so that's nice, but only one of our Saints has fast-growing nails, and she hates having them clipped. I have a professional set of clippers -- a big set for big nails -- but even then I have to sometimes squeeze with both hands. And, three of us have to hold her -- because when 200 pounds of "don't touch me!" starts kicking and pulling her paws, it's nearly impossible to get it done. The other dogs don't mind so much, but, then again, their nails are slow to grow.

If you're going to do it -- keep a jar of styptic powder handy.

I've yet to meet a dog that likes toenail clipping. The best you can hope for is that they tolerate you for as long as you need to do the job. Clip the nail too short or take too long doing it and the dog will try to make a break for it. Then you pretty much have to wait to try again the next day. I've had dogs with black toenails - it's hard to know where the quick is.

Because we walked our boys (dogs) three or four times a day on sidewalks and streets their nails wore down enough that trimming was not required...thank goodness.

My cats go to the vet. I'm in and out because I don't have to see a doctor for them. Nit too bad price wise. $28 for two cats.

Oh, I take them for dental cleaning and preventive care. I'm just talking about clipping. No way I'm doing that myself.
