If, as Carl Sagan once said, there are billions and billions of stars the likelihood of hundreds of thousands being rift with life forms is certainly very high.
OK no problem. Tt was the "what else are they hiding from us" that threw me off.

It's not obvious and IF there is intelligent life it's about as relevant to our existence as the multiverse. In any case, the Pope was simply addressing a distinctly modern fixation the roots of which lie in pseudoscience and New Age mumbo jumbo. Yeah, it's OK because it's ultimately meaningless.

Here is what all these predictions miss.

    1. The earth is tilted on its axis at precisely the right angle to allow seasons and deflect radiation
    2. Our moon is very rare in that its size and distance from earth allow for the ocean tides and forces that trigger volcanism. Both of these forces are key in allowing life. (Note due to size of our moon we are essentially a binary planetary system)
    3. The earth rotates at the right speed in the right direction to allow winds and temperature dispersal
    4. The sun is the right size and distance from the earth
    5. The earth has a magnetic field generated by said volcanism (moon generated) to deflect radiation
    6. The other planets are of right size and distance to allow all the above forces to generate positive effects
    7. Our solar system is in the rare spot in galaxy where it is not subject to heavy radiation
    8. Our Galaxy is the right size as to not cause same radiation issues and is place far enough away from other galaxies as to have us torn apart.

Any one of these factors would be uncommon. All of them (plus more not listed) together might lead you to some conclusions different than a pure count of stars and simple probability calculation.

As a side only a unique and special place could give us the United States of America and Donald Trump.

Another observation made by Asimov was that if intelligent life was to be found on other worlds it was highly unlikely any would be wasting time and energy coming by Earth. Although it happens frequently in sci fi movies it is improbable that Einstein's faster than the speed of light issue would be overcome. Even if the speed of light were attainable by some space traveler who would want to spend the 20, 30, 100, 1000 years going from The Covid 19 Star System to good old Mother Earth?

Who knows, maybe Einstein was wrong and the speed of light can be surpassed easily?

Einstein talked about wormholes. An Einstein-Rosen Bridge. No need to travel faster than the speed of light.

It always amazed me that humans could actually think they are the only Intelligent life in the Galaxy/Universe. What makes us so special? Were slightly evolved primates.

Astronomers estimate there are about 100 thousand million stars in the Milky Way alone. The observable universe is estimated to contain 200 billion to two trillion galaxies. Thats just the observable Universe, nobody knows how big the actual universe is or how many there are. The number of stars in a galaxy varies, but assuming an average of 100 billion stars per galaxy means that there are about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (that's 1 billion trillion) stars in the observable universe.

Latest estimates point to, at minimum, 2 planets around each star. So thats 100 to 400 billion planets in the Milky way alone, a medium sized unimpressive galaxy. So the number of planets in the observable universe can only be imagined using these egghead math symbols nobody ever seems to know what they mean. 4.e+24, which whatever it means is probably a whole lotta rocks circling around stars.
